The second RPG I played
The Memory
I got Star Wars Missions 1: Assault on Yavin Four at a Scholastic book fair in 3rd grade. I didn’t really know what it was, but I saw a black box with Star Wars on it and knew I wanted it!
Sitting on the living room couch, I devoured the book, my father finally having to send me to bed. From what I recall, you played as a rebel on Yavin after the Death Star was destroyed; the details are fuzzy at best. I remember that the book ended on a cliffhanger with a stormtrooper holding a blaster at your head and you discovering the Death Star had been transporting large amounts of contaminated Bacta.
Reminiscing
The book had both choose your own adventure components and dice rolling to determine certain outcomes. I haven’t run across that combo in anything else, though I am sure it exists. I question that, given I’ve played the board game Tales of the Arabian Nights springs to mind. As I think about it more, I come back to the idea of an adventure for a group done in that style.
